Part Two: Back-to-School Transit Tips
Staying Safe While Riding Public Transit
Every year, PRT gains hundreds of new riders as middle and high school students across Allegheny County head back to school - many riding PRT buses and light rail for the first time. Public transit is a safe, reliable, and affordable way to get to school, but like any new experience, it helps to have a few tips while navigating your first couple of months.
PRT operators and staff have some simple safety reminders to make sure students start their school year with confidence:
At the Stop:
- Check the Stop Number: Every PRT stop is labeled with a number. Double-check the sign to make sure you’re at the right place.
- Stay Visible: Stand where the driver can see you, not behind a tree, pole, or parked car. Keep your eyes on the road instead of your phone so you’re ready when the bus approaches.
- Don’t Chase the Bus: If the bus is already pulling away, don’t run after it or tap on the side. Another one will be along soon. Running in front of a bus is extremely dangerous.
Getting On and Off the Bus
- Wait Your Turn: When the bus stops and doors open, let riders exit before stepping on.
- Ask for Help: If you’re unsure about something, ask the driver when you board — they’re there to help.
- Lost Your Pass? Tell the driver instead of trying to sneak by. Communication is always better.
- Watch for Traffic: Remember that traffic doesn’t stop for PRT buses like it would for a school bus. Always look around carefully before crossing the street.
Riding Safely and Respectfully
- Use Priority Seating Wisely: The first seats seats on the bus are reserved for older riders and people with disabilities. You can sit in them if they are empty, but be sure to give up the seat if another rider needs it.
- Keep Bags on Your Lap: Don’t block seats or aisles with backpacks or sports gear.
- Mind Your Volume: Keep conversations, music, and earbuds at a reasonable level so everyone can enjoy the ride.
Building Independence with Confidence
As students settle into their new routines, these small steps can make a big difference in ensuring every ride is safe, smooth, and stress-free. Parents and guardians can help by reviewing these reminders with their children before the first day of school.
Pittsburgh Regional Transit is proud to be part of students’ journeys and is committed to keeping riders of all ages safe every day.
