Unwrap an Easier Light Up Night: Let PRT’s Free-Fare Zone and Trip Planner Guide the Way
With over 100,000 people expected in downtown Pittsburgh this weekend, our trip plan feature and free-fare zones can help alleviate traffic and parking congestion!

This Saturday, Pittsburgh’s 64th annual Light Up Night returns. From live music, food vendors, fireworks, and the lighting of multiple trees, there isn’t a corner of our downtown that won’t be coming to life for the holiday season. With over 100,000 people expected to attend, driving and parking downtown will be busy (to say the least!). At PRT, we encourage everyone to consider using the light rail free-fare zone within the downtown area, and use our trip plan feature to ensure dependable bus arrivals and departures.
City road closures begin Friday afternoon, but do not affect PRT service. Beginning Saturday morning several bus routes will have detours in place while crews set up for the event on Stanwix Street and Fort Duquesne Boulevard, and at 4 p.m. all PRT service will move onto Smithfield Street.

Riders should be aware that after 4 p.m., no bus service will be available on any Downtown streets north of Smithfield Street, including Stanwix Street, Wood Street, and Liberty Avenue.
Normal service will resume Sunday morning.
PRT does not anticipate that the Monongahela Incline will reopen this weekend. Shuttle vans will continue to operate between Station Square and the upper incline station every 15-20 minutes.
If you have any questions about bus routes or detours, you can check the PRT website for official detour maps and pertinent announcements.
The current schedule of events includes:
- 4:00 p.m.: Festivities begin with live music, food vendors, and holiday lights.
- 5:00 p.m.: First fireworks display and City-County Building tree lighting.
- 6:00 p.m.: PPG Place ice rink tree lighting.
- 7:00 p.m.: Horne's tree lighting, followed by fireworks.
- 8:00 p.m.: Sister Bridges lighting.
- 9:30 p.m.: Final fireworks finale.
This year’s Holiday market has been moved to Seventh Street and Penn Avenue due to construction in Market Square.
On behalf of PRT, we are excited to kick off Pittsburgh’s official start to the holiday season with so many of you. Here’s to a safe, celebratory holiday season.
