Building a Stronger Transit Future for Pittsburgh
During its 2025 Fiscal year, PRT invested in infrastructure and innovation—improving reliability today and preparing for tomorrow.

Pittsburgh Regional Transit closed out Fiscal Year 2025 with significant progress across infrastructure, safety, and modernization efforts. From major tunnel upgrades to everyday system maintenance, PRT invested in the reliability and resilience of the region’s transit system.
Major Projects Completed
This year, PRT delivered more than a dozen substantial infrastructure projects that will directly benefit riders and employees, including:
- Central Business District Upgrades: $15.5 million in escalator replacements at Steel Plaza, Wood Street, and First Avenue, plus $9 million in electrical improvements at Wood Street and Steel Plaza stations.
- Tunnel Modernization: $14 million in LED lighting and electrical upgrades in the Mt. Washington Tunnel, along with a $10 million replacement of the Mt. Lebanon Tunnel’s ventilation fans and controls.
- Safety & Reliability: $35 million for the CBD Plinth Repair Project which includes rehabilitated deteriorating track supports, while $600K in signal backup power units to protect the rail system from outages.
- Facility Improvements: $8 million in paint-booth replacements at South Hills Village Rail Center and $9 million in site improvements at South Hills Junction.
- Ongoing Rail Care: $2.4 million in Red and Blue Line rail grinding that extended rail life, complemented by annual geometry inspections and nondestructive testing.
These projects, alongside station and platform enhancements systemwide, underscore PRT’s commitment to maintaining safe, efficient, and modern infrastructure.

By modernizing key assets and extending the lifespan of existing infrastructure, PRT is paving the way for a more reliable, sustainable transit system for the Pittsburgh region.
